M83 - We own the sky Udachi ‘Remix edit yadatata’, back story and clarification..

July 6th, 2010

Mornin’! , posted these few pararaphs on soundcloud underneath the m83 remix widget thingamabob.. Gives a litte back story of the actual remix, and my perspective on it.

I decided to re-master the edit i did of m83’s “we own the sky” made the drums a bit bigger, same with the bass. The original edit i made for my first ever Trouble and Bass gig about a year and a half ago.

a little deeper back story:

First time i actually played it out i don’t think it got as good of a reaction as i would of hoped. I think also at the time used T.Racks to “master” it the best i could, but in fact making it sound more poopy and compressed haha.. But you live and learn. and i’ve gotten slightly better at mixing and mastering over time, yet still am learning! Since then i sent it to a few friends and it wound up getting blogged and somehow climbed to #1 on hype machine a few times and it’s kind of become “that guys tune” that everyone knows me by..

DISCLAIMER:
14 y/o Production/forum/blogger/dubstep snobs & geeks turn away! this isn’t a “groundbreaking” tune, if you want to hear some amazing melodic dubstep, take a listen to Joker, Boogaloo Crew, Kastle etc.. I took the original track and chopped it up a little and threw an extremely distorted bass and added some drums to maximize what i thought was the most “blissfull” part about the tune and tweaked it out a little. The original m83 song is absolutely beautiful, and is magnificent on it’s own.. i was even thinking about dropping the original dry as my last tune if i didn’t have a chance to make this edit.

This isn’t my best quality production for sure, the whole process took no longer than 2 hours from start mainly because i was in a hurry to finish it before my gig.. but people seem to react to it in an amazing emotional way, so for that I’m thankful.

I think the main reason I’m clarifying this is because i’ve been noticing a lot of criticism of the tune itself. Being completely frank, you learn to grow some thick skin over time, and you take criticism in the best way you can, which is constructive. Being that this isn’t my best effort, but somehow has gone beyond me and in a weird fracto-viral way took on a life of it’s own. To me that’s absolutely fascinating and new, to actually receive both sides of the spectrum of listener glee and producer ire is amazing in itself. I’m not a “dubstep dude” i love the genre and the main players of it, and i wasn’t trying to get insta-fame recognition for this tune, if i did.. i would of put in a LOT more effort. I’ve been asked to “re-re-master” it, which sounds a bit re-re-dundant haha. There’s a lot of other music to be made!

So that’s my little extended back story.. take this song for what you will, i think it’s great to listen to, although frankly im a little sick of it myself, :) But i truly appreciate the fact that this song is helping me make new fans that will hopefully come back and listen to more of my fun melodic dance music.

Thanks for listening as always, feel free to spread the word, blog it, share it, tweet it, play it, dance to it, bliss to it, cuz we own the sky!

Kastle - Better off Alone remix

July 5th, 2010

tootoooopottoooooo *beep sounds*

My good friend Barrett aka B. Rich aka the boosh, has been doing this side project of a more melodic style of writing comparatively to his more clubbier tunes. One thing i love about this project is that he’s really finding his voice with it. The tunes sound lush enough to listen on a hazy sunday afternoon, but also work amazingly well on a proper sound system.

I think it’s hard to name my favorite, but i really fell in love with his HeavyFeet - War Remix (Click to Purchase!), it reminds me of LTJ Bukem and MJ Cole, ghost in the machine vibes, the way the first drop melts away into the Jenna G’s haunting drone is absolutley spine tingling. Kind of stuff that makes you love music!

He recently told me he was doing his first official release as Kastle on Starkey and Dev 79’s label Seclusiasis (http://www.seclusiasis.com/) and it was “Better off alone” a tune loosely based on the 90s euro-dance version of the same name by Alice Deejay. Needless to say i volunteered my prompt remixing services for this tune.

This is a bit different i guess from my usual stuff.. (but what is usual?) But I’m extremely happy with the results.. Now if you follow me on soundcloud, you probably saw i uploaded it already. And you’ve probably thoroughly digested it.. I just wanted to give a little background on the song itself to set-up for the re-listen or the fresh listen. It’s melodic, it’s weird and glitchy and it sounds like lonely robots singing to the sky on a moon lit night (at least that’s how i visualized it if you can draw me an artistic rendition of that, that would be incredible!). Playing a lot more with dub effects, and getting more comfortable building nice subtle drum rhythms. This tune also smacks of Todd Edwards a bit, most definitely intentional, the man makes incredible music, and if i can build off that influence and put my voice behind it i think it stands to be a very enjoyable listen.

Turn up the sub as well!

The release is slated for late july, i will definitely keep y’all posted!

Thanks for reading, take a listen, and happy swimming!

No excuses!

This is the latest i’ve been up to, just wrapped up a small west coast tour, first time in calgary, vancouver, whistler and canmore. It was absolutely amazing to meet such a great bunch of people over such a compressed period of time. I wish i could of stayed longer, but i had to head down to San Fran to visit my friend Mikey Konnekt and play a show at the triple crown. It seems like every time i go over to the west coast i have an amazing semi life changing (maybe not so dramatic!) experience. I love the influence i can feel in my music and the way i write permeate from the culture i absorb while being out there. Every show went over extremely well, thank you so much for a wonderful time!

New single P-Funk Skank to come out on Party Like Us Records!

January 12th, 2010

Booo’urns.. Sorry for the lack of updates, been really busy working on a few remixes and my next party like us release! Here’s a quick round-up of what’s to come very soon!

Forthcoming: Udachi - P-Funk Skank (PLUR008)

Remixes by: Ricorb, Dave Nada, B.Rich, Costello, & Nadastrom

P-Funk Skank (CLIP) by udachi

Im really excited about this tune, it came from a really good flow of creativity, i love it when all the elements fall into place to take on a state of mind. Something that’s pretty straight-forward but enough psychedelic elements to make it musical on a different level. This track is slated to come out Feb 2nd on Party Like Us Records. Watch the blogs for late january when this guy starts making his rounds!
Forthcoming remixes:

South Rakkas Crew ft Seroce - Robots Revenge (Udachi Remix) [Marine Parade]

Ayres ft GLC - Got Me Gone (Udachi Remix)

I don’t have the full details on these releases yet, but il keep y’all posted! Once i’m allowed to post the clips il upload them to their respective listening sites.
